Sergeant Major Derrick S. Benbow

Sergeant Major Benbow attend recruit training at MCRD Parris Island on 15 September 1997 and graduated from the 1st Recruit Training Battalion 12 December 1997. Following graduation, he checked into Marine Combat Training on the 8 January 1998 and graduated on 10 February 1998. Sergeant Major Benbow then reported to Marine Corps Detachment Ft. Leonardwood, Missouri for Motor Transport Operator's Course. He graduated on Mar 1998 obtaining the MOS of 3531, Motor Transport Operator. Sergeant Major Benbow reported to 2nd Amphibious Assault Battalion in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina on 28 Mar 1998. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 1 August 1999. Serving as a Motor Transport Operator, Sergeant Major Benbow participated in four Combined Armed Exercises. In February of 2000 Sergeant Major Benbow was nominated and served as a member on the test team for the Mk 7ton vehicle. August 2001, Sergeant Major Benbow was promoted to the rank of Corporal and received orders to Marine wing Support Squadron 273 MCAS Beaufort, South Carolina.

Upon arrival at Marine Wing Support Squadron 273, Sergeant Major Benbow re-enlisted and opted for a lateral move to the MOS of 0431 Embarkation Logistic Specialist, where he conducted two pack-outs for detachments deploying to Djibouti, Africa. In January of 2003 Sergeant Major Benbow received PCA orders to Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina.

Upon checking in to the Recruit Training Regiment, Sergeant Major Benbow attended the Ground Safety and Osha Standards Course where he attained the MOS of 8912 and was promoted to Sergeant in 1 April 2003. Sergeant Major Benbow served as the Safety Manager for the Recruit Training Regiment where he conducted training and Operation Risk Management for each Battalion. His other billets included, Ammunitions Chief and S-4 Chief.

In November of 2004, Sergeant Major Benbow received orders to Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Squadron 2, MCAS Cherry Point North
Carolina. Serving as Embarkation Chief, Sergeant Major Benbow deployed in February of 2005 in support Operation Iraqi Freedom 04-06. During this operation Sergeant Major Benbow served as the Platoon Sergeant for the unit's Quick Reaction Force, where they stood up posts for the FOB's amber alert. Sergeant Major Benbow deployed a second time in March 2006 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 05-07 where he assumed the same billet and was also chosen as a guardian angel for the Iraqi Army's movements to Forward Observing Bases (FOB). On 1 February 2007 Sergeant Major Benbow was promoted to Staff Sergeant and deployed a third time in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 06-08 where he served as the S-4 Chief and was responsible for the TE for three Forward Observing Bases. Sergeant Major Benbow received orders to Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 31 MCAS Beaufort, South Carolina. He served as the Logistics Chief where he supported and did pack-ups for all the deploying Squadrons in Marine Air Group 31.

In January 2009, Sergeant Major Benbow attended Drill Instructor School and graduated in March of 2009. He was assigned to the 3rd
Recruit Training Battalion, Lima Company where he served in the billets of Drill Instructor, Experienced Drill Instructor, Senior Drill
Instructor, Chief Drill Instructor and Company First Sergeant. During his tour, Sergeant Major Benbow was subsequently promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant. He received orders to CLB-11 in October 2012, where he served as the Logistics Chief. In June 2013, he was promoted to First Sergeant and PCA’d to 5th Battalion, 11th Marines, Battery T. Sergeant Major Benbow deployed to Afghanistan with a hybrid Battery consisting of HIMARS and M777 conducting missions in support of I MEF operations and Task Force Belleau Woods from January 2014 to August 2014. In May of 2016, Sergeant Major Benbow received orders to 3d Law Enforcement Battalion where he executed Korean Marine Exchange Program 17.7 and multiple other exercises. Sergeant Major Benbow was promoted to his current rank in April 2018 and assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron MCAS New RIVER as the Senior Enlisted Advisor. In 2021, Sergeant Major Benbow received orders to 8th Communication Battalion where he served until his appointment as School of Infantry East Senior Enlisted Advisor where he currently serves.
