Sergeant Major Javier G. Renteria

Sergeant Major Javier G. Renteria enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and reported to Marine Corps Recruit Deport, CA for recruit training in March 1998.  Upon graduating he reported to School of Infantry (West), Infantry Training Battalion, Camp Pendleton, CA for infantry MOS training.

In August 1998, then Private First Class Renteria reported to Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines.  In February 1999, Private First Class Renteria graduated as a qualified Marine Assault Climber/Special Operations Training Group (SOTG) and was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal in March 1999.  In January 2000, he was promoted to the rank of Corporal and in August 2000, he graduated as Honor Graduate from the resident Corporal's Leadership Course given at Camp Del Mar, Camp Pendleton, CA.  In Mar 2001, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.  During this time, Sergeant Renteria deployed as the 60mm Mortar Fire Direction Center Chief, 60mm Mortar Section Leader and Chief Assault Climber with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) Special Operations Capable (SOC) to the Arabian Gulf in support of Operation Southern Watch and with the 15th MEU SOC to Helmand Province, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom as a part of Task Force 58. 

In May 2002, Sergeant Renteria transferred to the Individual Ready Reserve.  In October 2004, Sergeant Renteria joined 4th Light Amphibious Reconnaissance Battalion and in May 2005 he returned to active duty with Weapons Company, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines.  In October 2005, Sergeant Renteria attended Sergeant's Course and graduated as an Honor Graduate for his class.  In May 2006, he deployed with Weapons Company as a Squad Leader for the newly created 4th Platoon, designated as a Mobile Assault Platoon, to Anbar Province, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.  During this time he has held the billets of Squad Leader, 81mm Mortar Section Leader and Combined Anti-Armor Team (CAAT) Section Leader. 

In July 2007, Sergeant Renteria transferred to the School of Infantry (West) and was assigned as a Combat Instructor with Company B, Infantry Training Battalion.  In January 2009, he was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant, and served as the Weapons Platoon Commander for Company C from January 2009 to July 2010. 

In July 2010, Staff Sergeant Renteria reported to Weapons Company, 2d Battalion, 5th Marines, and deployed with the 31st MEU taking part in a humanitarian operation in support of Operation Tomadachi and in March 2012 he returned to Helmand Province, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.  He held the billets of  Tactical Recovery of Aircraft and Personnel (TRAP) Section Leader, Helicopter Rope Suspension Techniques (HRST) Master, 81mm Mortar Section Leader, 81mm Mortar Platoon Sergeant, and Company Gunnery Sergeant. 

In April 2013, Staff Sergeant Renteria was transferred to Headquarters and Service (H&S) Company and served as the Platoon Sergeant for the Security Element Platoon, Maritime Raid Force for a follow-on deployment to Okinawa, Japan in support of the 31st MEU. 

In August 2014, Staff Sergeant Renteria reported to Unit Training Section, Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center as a Mountain Warfare Instructor.  In July 2015, he was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant and he held the billets of Team Leader, Chief Instructor of Unit Training Section and SNCOIC of Unit Training Section. 

In January 2018, Gunnery Sergeant Renteria reported to the Basic Security Guard Course, Chesapeake VA and upon graduation was transferred to Marine Corps Security Forces Battalion Bangor, to serve as Company Gunnery Sergeant, Company B.  In December 2018, Gunnery Sergeant Renteria was re-assigned to H&S Company to serve as the Company Gunnery Sergeant and subsequently the Company First Sergeant. 

In August 2019, he was promoted to the rank of First Sergeant and was assigned as the Inspector-Instructor First Sergeant, 6th Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company and in August 2021 was reassigned as the Unit Senior Enlisted Leader, Company B, Wounded Warrior Battalion-East. 

In May 2023, he was reassigned to his current position as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader, Advanced Infantry Training Battalion, School of Infantry-East.

Sergeant Major Renteria's personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with 1 gold star, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with 1 gold star and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with 3 gold stars.
