Sergeant Major Zurn was born in Bloomer, Wisconsin. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2004. Upon completing recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, CA, he reported to Marine Combat Training (MCT) at the School of Infantry, Camp Pendleton, CA. Following MCT, he graduated from Marine Corps Engineer School and went on to serve as a Combat Engineer with Combat Engineer Company, Combat Assault Battalion, Camp Schwab, Okinawa, Japan.
In December 2004, Private First Class Zurn supported humanitarian mission JTF 535 in the Philippines, providing security for joint forces delivering food and water to local communities. In June of 2005 he deployed with Fox Company, Battalion Landing Team (BLT) 2/4, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU). Immediately after his rotation with BLT 2/4 he deployed on another rotation of the 31st MEU with BLT 2/5. In the summer of 2006 the 31st MEU conducted Humanitarian Assistance Disaster Relief (HADR) operations in the Philippines where Lance Corporal Zurn led an engineer site to build road access for USAID and follow on forces in Southern Leyte.
After his tour in Okinawa, he was assigned to Bridge Company, 8th Engineer Support Battalion (ESB), Camp Lejeune, NC. In February 2007, he deployed as a security team leader with Combat Logistics Battalion 2 (CLB-2) in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. After his deployment, he returned to 8th ESB as the Company Bridge Master. In August of 2008, he deployed with CLB-2 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, but this time as the Unit Movement Control Center (UMCC) Assistant Chief. After his deployment, he returned to 8th ESB.
In the fall of 2009, he attended Combat Engineer NCO (CENCO) Course at Courthouse Bay, Camp Lejeune where he graduated as the academic high for both the Core Course and the Combat Support Course. Once completing the CENCO Courses, Sergeant Zurn attached to 9th ESB in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in the Helmand Province where he served as the Battalion Bridge Master and Platoon Guide.
In 2011 he transitioned to Marine Special Operations School (MSOS), Marine Special Operations Command (MARSOC). During his time with MSOS he would attend the Combat Service Support Course of CENCO. In March of 2015, Staff Sergeant Zurn became a recruiter in Longview, TX, under Recruiting Sub-Station (RSS) Longview, Recruiting Station (RS) Dallas. He took over as the Recruiting Sub-Station commander for RSS Longview, RS Dallas in September 2016.
In March of 2018, Gunnery Sergeant Zurn took orders as the Engineer Chief for Combat Logistics Battalion 11 (CLB-11) 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, Camp Pendleton, CA where he deployed with the 11th MEU 19.2. After his tour with CLB-11, he attended the Force Fitness Instructor Course (FFIC). From January 2021 to January 2022 he served as the Company First Sergeant and Operations Chief for Engineer Company, Task Force Koa Moana 21, I Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF) where he deployed to the Republic of Palau to rebuild infrastructure on the islands of Peleliu and Babelthuap.
Upon completion of Task Force Koa Moana 21, First Sergeant Zurn executed orders to Combat Logistics Regiment 37 where he served as the Unit Senior Enlisted Leader for Communications Company, Service Company, Headquarters and Service Company, and served as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader for Combat Logistics Regiment 37 and Camp Kinser, Okinawa.
In June of 2025 First Sergeant Zurn reported to Lima Company, Headquarters and Service Battalion, School of Infantry East. In October of 2025 First Sergeant Zurn took over as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader for Headquarters and Service Battalion where he is currently positioned. He was then selected and promoted to the rank of Sergeant Major in December 2025.
Sergeant Major Zurn holds a Bachelors Degree in Human Resources Management from American Military University. His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal w/ one gold star in lieu of second award, Navy and Marine Achievement Medal w/ one gold star in lieu of second award, Combat Action Ribbon, Certificates of Commendation, Meritorious Masts, and Letters of Appreciation.
