Sergeant Major Thomas R. Coffey

Sergeant Major Thomas R. Coffey is a native of Long Island, NY and Spring Hill Florida.  He enlisted in the Marine Corps in September 2000 and completed Recruit Training at MCRD Parris Island, SC.  After Recruit Training and Marine Combat Training, he attended Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting School in San Angelo, TX. 
 
Following MOS School, he was assigned to Marine Corps Air Facility Kaneohe Bay, HI.  During this tour, he served as a P-19 Crewmen, P-19 Crew Chief, Assistant Section Leader, and Section Leader participating in various exercises.  While Stationed in Hawaii he volunteered for an Individual Augment (IA) bullet Deploying to Najaf, Iraq from July 2004 to March 2005 with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) attached to 1st Battalion, 4th Marines where he served as the Battalion Landing Team's Watch Chief. 
 
In July 2006, Sergeant Major Coffey attended Drill Instructor School at MCRD Parris Island, SC and was named the Honor Graduate for class 4-06.  He immediately attended the Marine Combat Instructor of Water Survival (MCIWS) course before being assigned to 1st Battalion, Bravo Company where he served as a Drill Instructor, Experienced Drill Instructor, and Senior Drill Instructor.  He also served at the Combat Training Pool where he completed Marine Combat Instructor Trainer of Water Survival (MCITWS) course. 
 
In August 2009, Sergeant Major Coffey was assigned to MWSS-274 where he served as the Aircraft Rescue & Fire Fighting (ARFF) Crash Chief.  While attached to MWSS-274 he deployed to Helmand Province, Afghanistan from February to September 2010.  When his unit came back from deployment he filled the billet of Air Operations Company Gunnery Sergeant.  In April 2011 he was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant. 
 
In December 2011, Sergeant Major Coffey applied for and received orders to Assistant Marine Officer Instructor (AMOI) duty at NROTC Rice University.  While there he served as the NROTC Senior Enlisted Advisor for the Command along with training and mentoring over 300 Midshipmen to become Commissioned Officers in the Marine Corps and United States Navy.  He also augmented at Officer Candidate School (OSC) in the summers of 2012 and 2013 as a Sergeant Instructor and Platoon Sergeant. 
 
In January  2015 he was promoted to the rank of 1stSgt and received orders to 2d Battalion 6th Marines in Camp Lejeune, NC. where he served as Fox Company First Sergeant.  In October 2015 he deployed with Fox Company, 2/6 on the 26th MEU aboard the USS Arlington.  In April 2017 Sergeant Major Coffey was assigned to 8th Communication Battalion where he served as the Company 1stSgt for Bravo Company and Service Company. 
 
In March 2019 Sergeant Major Coffey was promoted to his current rank and assigned as the Inspector - Instructor Sergeant Major for 3d Battalion, 14th Marines.  There he provided organizational leadership to the Battalion spanning over 5 different geographical locations executing three Battalion level annual training exercises. 
 
In June of 2022 Sergeant Major Coffey reported to H&HS Cherry Point, NC. to serve as the Squadron Sergeant Major where he provided senior leadership to over 23 different sections in order to maintain the daily operation of MCAS Cherry Point.  In August 2023 Sergeant Major Coffey received orders to 2d Marine Regiment, Camp Lejeune, NC.  While there he participated SLTE aboard 29 Palms, CA. for ITX 5-24 from July to September 2024.  The Regiment also deployed as RCT-2 participate in Joint Viking 25 from February to March 2025 in Setermoen, Norway.  Culminating his time at 2d Marines he deployed for Atlantic Alliance 25 aboard the Dutch ship John De Wit as the Regimental Landing Team Command Senior Enlisted Leader from June to July 2025.

In December of 2025 Sergeant Major Coffey reported to his present command, School of Infantry East, Camp Geiger, NC.
